The threat of radiation leakage: the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is disconnected from electricity, Russian invaders do not allow to repair the breakdown
The Chernobyl nuclear power plant, seized by Russian troops on the first day of the war, was de-energized on March 9 due to an accident on the power line, Ukrenergo and the State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine said. Meduza.
Ukrainian state nuclear company Energoatom said there are about 20 units of spent fuel in storage at the occupied Chernobyl nuclear power plant that need constant cooling, “which is only possible if electricity is available,” it said. NBCChicago.
Ukrainian authorities say the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear power plant, site of the world's largest nuclear disaster, has been disconnected from the grid. Emergency generators now provide backup power.
The state communications agency says the shutdown could jeopardize cooling systems for nuclear materials.
“If there is no electricity, the pumps will not provide cooling, which will increase the temperature in the cooling pools,” Energoatom said in a statement. “There will be steaming and release of radioactive substances into the environment.”

The reason for the damage to the power line serving Chernobyl was not immediately clear, but it came against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Since last week, this place has been under the control of Russian troops.
Ukrainian grid operator Ukrenergo said that, according to the national nuclear regulator, all Chernobyl facilities are de-energized and diesel generators have fuel for 48 hours. It states that without electricity, it is impossible to control the "parameters of nuclear and radiation safety."
Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said the power grid was damaged and called for a ceasefire to allow repairs to be made.
The IAEA later tweeted that it did not see a critical safety impact caused by the power outage.
"The IAEA states that the thermal load of the spent fuel pool and the volume of cooling water at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant are sufficient to effectively remove heat without the need for electricity," the agency said in a statement.

On the morning of March 9, the IAEA reported that Ukraine turned to the organization for help with ensuring the rotation of personnel at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, since the same shift of 210 people has been working there since the beginning of the war, contact with which has been preserved only through e-mail. The IAEA no longer receives data from the Chernobyl safety monitoring system.
