A dog saved: a woman from Washington spent 2 days in a ravine with a broken leg

A resident of Washington went on a hiking trip, broke her leg and fell into a ravine. She had a chance to survive for two days, having only 4 bottles of water and some snacks. Writes about this KomoNews.

Search and rescue teams found Barbara Dadswell about two miles (3,2 km) up the path in Snohomish County and took her to a safe place.

Since then, Dadswell has been recovering at the Everett Regional Medical Center (Washington).

“At first I was afraid, but then I just decided not to think about the bad,” Dudswell recalls about the time spent waiting.

For two long days the woman tried withfocus on the natural beauty surrounding her, and wondered how she was still alive.

“It was raining and I thought, 'Do you just want to die here? Or will you have to do something? Because no one will come here. Nobody knows you’re here,” she recalled those days.

14 September Barbara went camping with her dog. She had only four bottles of water and a few Slim Jims snacks. She almost reached the end of the trail, but slipped on a large log, broke her leg and fell into a ravine.

“She slipped and her leg broke. I did not even notice how this happened. It all happened so fast, ”said Dudswell. “I did not know what would happen to me, so I screamed very loudly.”

The shock turned into determination.

She used a backpack for her dog, shoe laces and a few sticks to splint on her leg. So she spent the next day and a half trying to climb closer to the trail.

Out of nowhere, a young runner heard a dog barking.

“I heard a man’s voice and screamed at the top of my lungs: “You are a man!” You are human - thank God! - Dadswell said. “The guy asked, ‘Are you okay?’ and I said, ‘No, I’m not.’”

“When you think that nothing will save and you are likely to die, someone suddenly appears. Then you already hear a voice, and in your head the thought haunts you: “This cannot be ...” — overwhelming emotions Barbara.

According to Dudswell, the man ran 2 miles (3,2 miles) and back to take some water and clothing from the car. Then he went to the ranger post for help.

Search services tried to find Dudswell, but the weather interfered. Ground crews of approximately 20 search and rescue volunteers climbed two miles (3,2 km) up the trail, found Dudswell, and then delivered it to a safe place.

“Be thankful for everything you have,” said Dudswell. “Just be thankful.”

Dudswell underwent knee surgery, she should not be burdened with the right leg for the next 3 months. She is going to go to the rehabilitation center in Lynnwood, where she will have a long and slow recovery, but the woman is very grateful to everyone who saved her.

“Secure yourself. Be sure to tell someone where you are going. And always make sure: if something happens, they will look for you, ”she said.

Rangers from the U.S. National Park Service say that even if you plan a one-day walk along a simple route, you need to bring 10 with you all the necessary things, including navigation tools, extra clothes, lights, first aid items, food and water.
