Ukrainian woman in the USA has developed a unique method of contraception and received a prestigious award

Ukrainian scientist Polina Lishko, who works at the University of Berkeley in California, received the prestigious American MacArthur “for geniuses” award. She will receive $625 in research funding over the next five years. The story of the Ukrainian woman was told by the publication "Voice of America".

Polina Lishko is a professor of molecular and cellular biology, she works in the field of reproductive physiology. She managed to develop a new non-hormonal method of contraception for women, based on which new unisex contraceptives can be created. She invented a drug that affects sperm and prevents sperm from fertilizing an egg.

“The MacArthur Fellowship is life-changing. Psychologically, this is a huge boost - not only for me, but also for the team, because it demonstrates recognition of the importance of reproductive physiology,” says Lishko.

The scientist works with her husband Yuri Kirichko. They both graduated from the Bogomolets Institute of Physiology in Kiev, and then moved to work in the United States.

The couple say they love the way American universities offer the opportunity to combine theoretical research with applied science. In their opinion, this gave them the opportunity to develop their scientific potential and contribute to world science.
