He killed a family with a child: in the United States for the first time in 17 years, they will carry out the death penalty at the federal level
The United States plans to conduct the first federal death penalty in 17 years. The execution is due to 47-year-old Daniel Lewis Lee, who was found guilty of killing a family of three in 1996. Writes about it with the BBC.
Relatives of the man demanded to postpone the death penalty, arguing that while visiting the prison where the procedure will be carried out, they can become infected with a coronavirus.
However, the US Federal Court of Appeals rejected this request. The judge concluded that there was no reason to postpone the death penalty. Relatives want to have time to appeal this decision in the Supreme Court.
Daniel Lewis Lee is one of several criminals scheduled to be executed in the near future - during July and August. All of them were found guilty of crimes related, in particular, to the murder of children.
They will be the first convicts to whom the death penalty will be applied at the federal level in 17 years.
Since 2003, the death penalty at the federal level in the United States has not actually been used - there has been an unofficial moratorium. At the same time, this penalty could be applied at the level of individual states.
81-year-old Earlene Peterson also spoke out against the death penalty for Daniel Lewis Lee - it was her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter who were victims of murder.
According to the woman, she does not want to be executed, but that the offender spent his whole life in prison.

“Yes, Daniel Lewis Lee ruined my life, but I don’t believe his death will change anything,” Peterson said.
Recovery of the death penalty
A return to the practice of capital punishment at the federal level in the United States became known in 2019.
At the time, Attorney General William Barr said: “The Department of Justice supports the rule of law, and it is our duty to crime victims and their families to carry out the sentences imposed by the U.S. justice system.”
The death penalty will be used by injecting pentobarbital with a convict. This is a drug that gradually slows down the body, in particular the nervous system, and ultimately leads to death.
The death penalty is still a legal punishment in 28 US states, but in practice it is not used everywhere.
Over the past 20 years, the annual number of death sentences in the United States has decreased by 88%: from 295 in 1998 to 43 in 2018.
