Thousands of scientists warn mankind about global environmental catastrophe

More than 15 thousands of scientists from 184 countries have signed an appeal to humanity with a warning about the impending environmental catastrophe.

An open letter published a magazine BioScience.

The appeal, entitled “The Second Warning,” was signed by 15 environmental scientists from around the world. Experts are warning humanity that the planet is on the verge of an ecological crisis, and this is largely the result of human activity.

Scientists called on state leaders to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, stop using coal and oil as fuel, start reforestation and stop the trend to reduce the diversity of life on the planet.

“Soon it will be too late to get off this disastrous trajectory, and time is running out. We must recognize that the Earth with all its inhabitants is our only home, ”the letter’s authors emphasized.

In support of their words, they brought frightening statistics.

Compared to 1960 year, drinking water supplies and the number of vertebrate species decreased by 25%, while carbon dioxide emissions increased by 62%. Over the same period, the world's population grew by 35%, and the number of livestock increased by 20%. The only positive change in the last 20 years was the reduction by 68% of chemical emissions leading to the appearance of ozone holes in the atmosphere.

Scientists claim that by their actions, humanity has provoked the mass extinction of many species of living beings. The recent mass extinction of species is the sixth in a row in the last 540 million years. Many species of animals are predicted to cease to exist on Earth by the end of the XXI century.

In the “Second Warning”, the experts came to the conclusion that humanity over 25 years could not solve any of the problems mentioned in the first appeal. These problems may soon lead to "the great suffering of all people" on the planet, scientists warned.
