Toilet paper, meat and eggs: which essential goods will rise in price this summer

Pork, bacon and hot dogs

What's a holiday without bacon and hot dogs? Perhaps you will include them on your next BBQ shopping list. But, alas, soon they will rise in price. The fallout from the pandemic will keep bacon and hot dog prices high throughout the summer as demand rises amid low supply.

Most likely, there will be no discounts on these products during the summer. One way to save money is to stock up if you happen upon a good deal. Don't forget: meat is easy to freeze and easy to defrost when you want to cook it.

Beef

Since the start of the pandemic, beef prices have risen as more people start cooking at home. Prices remained high throughout the summer and then dropped in time for fall.

“There will be less beef available in the second half of 2021 as beef prices remain high,” Will Sawyer, chief economist at CoBank, said recently. “In addition, it looks like prices for animal feed will increase by 25-30%.”

Alcohol

Basically, all summer BBQ foods are getting more expensive. According to Forbes, between February 2020 and February 2021, prices for spirits, wine and beer increased by 2%. Although, despite this trend, sales have increased, especially on the Internet.

Fresh fruits

Fresh fruit prices plummeted in 2019 and 2020, according to the USDA. However, in March 2021, they were 5,6% higher compared to the same month in 2020. Presumably, they will not get cheaper.

“Fresh fruit prices are projected to increase $2021 to $2 in 3,” the department said in a statement.

Eggs

The price of eggs rose and fell like a roller coaster like other foods in 2020. The USDA is now forecasting that the price of eggs will rise 1,5% against the Producer Price Index (PPI), "which measures the prices paid to domestic producers for their produce." PPI changes do not always mean a sharp increase or decrease in prices for the consumer, but they are a good indicator of what will happen in the near future.

Fats and oils

The PPI also predicts that the price of fats and oils will rise 16% on the back of increased demand. This is a big difference compared to 2019, when oils, like many other products, were cheaper.
