30 years since the collapse of the USSR: more than 60% of Russians believe it was a mistake

December 26, 1991 was the last day of the existence of the USSR. Russians and residents of the now post-Soviet countries celebrated the New Year in the new country, but not everyone was ready for this. Writes about it with the BBC.

More than half of Russians miss the USSR

I must say that even now more than 60% of Russians miss the Soviet Union and believe that life was better then.

According to the results of the study, fellow citizens aged 46-60 (82%) regret the collapse of the USSR most of all (60%); among Russians over 76, this share is XNUMX%, writes Interfax.

Among young people aged 18-30, more than a quarter of respondents (28%) regret the collapse of the Soviet state; among fellow citizens aged 32 to 45, more than half (56%), sociologists note.

How people remember the USSR and its collapse

“When we were sent to serve, it was the class of 1991. Already knowing that the army was collapsed, all the young lieutenants were still sent to Belarus and Ukraine. Just on the last day of the USSR, upon arrival, those who served in the Soviet army were already border guards of the Belarusian army,” one of the Russians recalls those times.

"What did I do? I was getting ready for the holidays. I bought something, although I didn’t have much,” says a resident of the former USSR.

“The memories of the 1990s are all bad: uncertainty about the future, there was no stable income. Everyone was waiting to see if they would give us a salary for the New Year,” another USSR citizen shared her memories. - I feel much better now. Everything is calm, I receive a stable salary.”

“There was nothing at all. No salary was paid. There were no products. Everything is on cards. I sent parcels to my parents in containers from Belarus,” another man shared.

“This is some kind of horror! Then my little child was born. How hard it was! I don’t even want to remember,” one of the respondents lamented.

“Then there were huge cuts. I saw on the subway: a decently dressed woman was sitting and asking for alms,” one of the men suggested.

“People hoped for Yeltsin. This is the first time in my life that such a collapse has happened,” the interlocutor expressed her opinion.

“He’s not tough at all, but he should have acted tougher. There was no need to destroy the Union. But he did it because he was scared,” says one of those yearning for the USSR. - They would come back. It was better there. People were better then, but now everyone needs a lot of money, everyone is angry.”

"Good guy. He ruined it and it’s good,” the man disagrees with her.

What else was in the survey

Every fifth Russian (21%) does not regret that the Soviet Union ceased to exist 30 years ago, among Russians under 30 years old - more than a third (39%).

According to the poll, 17% of Russians, or almost every sixth, could not determine their perception of the collapse of the USSR.

The results of the study show that 45% of fellow citizens are confident that Russia will lose from the collapse of the Soviet Union, the opposite opinion is held by about a third of Russians (32%).

To the question of sociologists about whether there is a desire to recreate the USSR, more than half of the respondents (52%) answered positively, almost every third respondent (31%) gave a negative answer.

At the same time, almost three quarters of Russians (74%) are sure that it is impossible to restore the unified state that collapsed 30 years ago; only 17% of fellow citizens admit such a possibility.

If we talk about the likelihood of unification of the former Soviet republics, then 6% of Russians consider it possible to unite everyone in the foreseeable future, every tenth (10%) admits the likelihood of unification of most of the former Soviet republics, 29% of Russians believe in the unification of some republics, almost everyone does not believe in unification the second participant in the survey (47%).
