Trump wants to cancel the Green Card Lottery

US President Donald Trump proposed to virtually abolish the visa drawing scheme for immigrants operating since 1990, known as Green Card. Instead, it is proposed to adopt a new bill called The raise (“The Rise”), suggesting a new mechanism for distributing visas based on the qualifications of the employee. This was reported on the official website of Republican Senator Tom Cotton (Tom Cotton), one of the authors of the document.

Lawmakers believe that the current system is outdated, and the lottery has become a “target for scammers, it does not correspond to economic and humanitarian interests.”

The new system, according to the President of the United States, will select candidates “based on merit,” which, in his opinion, will protect American workers and US citizens.

“For decades, the United States has used a migration system targeted at unskilled workers and issued a record number of green cards to low-paid migrants. This policy has led to strong pressure on American workers, taxpayers and public resources, ”Trump said.

The bill provides for the introduction of a points system for immigrants: priority will be given to visitors who are potentially able to professionally succeed and improve the American economy.

«RAISE... is a competitive, application-based process that will work in favor of applicants who can speak English, support themselves and their families financially, and demonstrate skills useful to our economy,” the president said.

In addition, the document defines the limit of refugees who can live permanently in the United States - up to 50 thousand per year.

Earlier this year, Senators Tom Cotton and David Purdue submitted a bill, designed to reduce the number of legal immigrants from 1 million to 500 000 per year. The bill also calls for restricting the admission of migrant relatives to the country, abolishing the visa lottery and complicating the process of obtaining a green card that allows you to live and work in the country.
