Trump will suspend the issue of certain categories of visas until the end of the year
US President Donald Trump will expand the existing visa ban by including certain non-immigrant work visas as part of measures to protect workers in the United States in the face of economic turmoil associated with the coronavirus pandemic, a senior administration official said Monday, June 22, writes Reuters.
Trump will ban the entry of foreign workers on H-1B visas for skilled workers and L-1 visas for workers transferred within companies until the end of the year, the official said. The President will also prohibit the entry of seasonal workers on H-2B visas, with the exception of catering workers.
The move comes despite opposition from businesses that rely on foreign workers, including big technology companies and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation's largest business association, which said the ban would hamper economic recovery. Critics of the measure say Trump is using the pandemic to achieve his longtime goal of limiting immigration into the United States.
The immediate consequences of the decision are likely to be limited, as US consulates around the world remain closed to most conventional visa procedures due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Trump is running for re-election on November 3 and has made his tough stance on immigration central to voters, although coronavirus, an unstable economy, and recent nationwide protests over police brutality have eclipsed this problem in recent months.

The visa suspension is Trump's latest move to restrict immigration in response to the pandemic and its economic fallout.
Trump will also resume April ban, which temporarily prevents some foreigners from residing in the United States, a senior administration official said Monday, June 22.
In March, Trump developed new rulesto quickly deport immigrants caught at the border, and in fact block access to the asylum system in the United States.
At the same time, he announced that land borders with Canada and Mexico would be closed for optional trips, this measure was extended several times.
