Trump wants to return Russia to the G8

The G8 format ceased to operate in the 2014 year, when Western countries refused to work with Russia after its occupation of Crimea.

US President Donald Trump, during negotiations with Romanian President Klaus Johannis at the White House, supported the idea of ​​Russia returning to G8, calling this format more appropriate. It is reported RBC with reference to Bloomberg.

“If someone made an offer to return Russia to the group, then this should be taken seriously,” he said. Russia's presence in the G8 is an “appropriate” proposal, Trump added.

As the head of state noted, the previous US president Barack Obama, who, according to Trump, realized that Putin “outplayed him”, is to blame for the collapse of the G8 format.

“She (Russia) should be in G8, because Russia should be involved in many of the things we are discussing,” Trump said.

A proposal to return to the G8 format on the eve of August 19 was made by the former deputy of the French National Assembly, Jacques Miyard. The politician said this, commenting on the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to France, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron.

“I am glad that Macron is receiving Putin ahead of the G7 summit at Fort Bregancon. But it is urgently necessary for France to lift sanctions against Russia <...> Russia is part of the European balance and without it peace in Europe cannot be ensured, ”he said.

The G8 format has existed since the 1998 year. In 2014, it was reduced to G7 amid the annexation of Crimea by Russia. Then the club leaders decided not to go to the next summit in Sochi, but gathered without Russia in Brussels.
