Trump wants to introduce 20% import tax from Mexico to cover the cost of the wall
US President Donald Trump intends to appeal to Congress to impose a tax in 20% of the total imports from Mexico, in order to send the money to build a wall on the US-Mexico border.
This was stated by the press secretary of the White House, Sean Spicer, reports New York Times.
“We can raise $10 billion a year and easily pay for the wall using just this mechanism. This will provide the necessary funding,” Spicer said aboard Air Force One, adding that Mexico ships $50 billion worth of goods to the United States each year.
He did not specify specific details about the new tax, and did not explain how it will be administered, but said that its introduction could be included in the comprehensive package of tax reform that the Trump team is preparing.
This statement was made after Mexican President Peña Nieto announced that he would not come to Washington to meet with Trump, making it clear that Mexico does not intend to pay for the wall, as counted on the head of the United States.
