Now you can get a green card and social security number together: how to do it

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that applicants for a green card can now apply for a Social Security Number (SSN). This is stated in a press release from USCIS.

Previously, these people had to apply for a social security number at the social security office. USCIS is revising Form I-485, Application for Registration of Permanent Residence or Adjustment of Status, to include additional questions required to apply for an SSN or Social Security Card Replacement.

“This expansion of our partnership with the Social Security Administration demonstrates our commitment to more efficiently managing our nation's immigration system to save applicants time,” said USCIS Director Ur Jaddu. “Eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy and optimizing collaboration between government agencies is a key priority for our department and the administration of US President Joe Biden.”

After Form I-485 is approved, in most cases, USCIS will electronically submit the data to the Social Security Administration. Upon receipt of the data, Social Security will automatically assign an original SSN or issue a replacement card, as applicable. That being said, the partnership with the Social Security Administration will not increase the fee for filing Form I-485.

This change is effective immediately and applicants can start filing with the updated form today.

USCIS receives approximately 576 I-000 forms annually.
