Shooting in Texas: Latinos blame Trump with his rhetoric against immigrants

Latin American leaders believe the anti-immigrant rhetoric of US President Donald Trump is fueling violence, contributing to tragedies such as the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, during which 20 people were killed.

A few hours after the shooter killed 20 and injured 26 people in El Paso, Texas, Latin American leaders expressed the view that part of the blame lies with President Donald Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric, writes Vice.com.

The suspected shooter is supposed to have posted a hateful manifest on an anonymous online bulletin board 45 minutes before the massacre. In it, he stated that "this attack is a response to the Latin American invasion of Texas."

The Walmart supermarket that the shooter targeted is a known shopping destination for Mexican citizens crossing the border. This store serves the multicultural community in El Paso. In February, Donald Trump rallied immigration opponents in El Paso by blaming undocumented immigrants for killing American citizens and driving down wages in the region.

Latin American leaders say there are eerie parallels between what Trump said about immigrants and the rifleman's remarks from El Paso.

Rep. Joaquin Castro, who represents neighboring San Antonio and is chairman of the Spanish-speaking Council of Congress, said he is worried about his young children after a shooting aimed at people like his family.

“For years, the president has targeted the Latino community, and this kind of dangerous and racist rhetoric comes at a cost,” Castro said by phone from his home in San Antonio. “If you look at the shooter’s manifesto, it is consistent with the language that President Trump used to describe Hispanic immigrants as part of the invasion of the United States.”

Although the shooter wrote that all these beliefs were inherent to him even before Trump took power, Castro said that the tone that Trump sets with his rhetoric contributes to violence.

League of United Latin American Citizens President Domingo Garcia said the shooter was "paraphrasing President Trump" in passages from the manifesto, which claimed the massacre was a response to "an invasion of the country by immigrants" - words similar to those Trump used.

“He talked about invading the United States,” Garcia said in a telephone interview from Dallas. “He said that rapists and murderers were coming to the country. This young man, whatever his mental state, acted on it. And now 20 people are dead.”

“The president sets the tone through rhetoric, hate speech, anti-immigrant, anti-Hispanic hate speech, and young people love the way this man acts,” he said.

The White House did not immediately respond to criticism of Trump's rhetoric.

The head of the White House administration, Mick Mulvaney, dismissed the allegation, saying that Trump is upset and angry.

“I hate to draw attention to the manifesto, but if you really look at it, the guy says he felt this way long before Donald Trump was elected president,” Mulvaney said. “No politician is to blame for this. Those who pulled the trigger are responsible."

Garcia said Trump and other Republicans and Conservatives should soften their anti-immigrant rhetoric to avoid new murders. Castro said that Congress should schedule a hearing to investigate the execution.

Trump tweeted Saturday night, promising his full support to the people of El Paso.

“Together with everyone in this country, I condemn the current act of hatred. No reason can justify killing innocent people, ”he wrote on Twitter.
