Strategic Russian military facilities are no longer blurred on Google maps: the search engine said they did not change the settings
Google says it has made no changes to its censorship of Russia's satellite imagery, despite widespread claims on Twitter that the company has "opened access to Russian military and strategic installations." Writes about it The Verge.
The Twitter account @ArmedForcesUkr (which is unverified but quoted several times by the official account of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense) posted a number of images showing military equipment.
“Now everyone can see dozens of Russian launch sites, ICBM mines, command posts and secret testing sites with a resolution of about 0,5 meters per pixel,” it said on Twitter.

The post has been quoted by news organizations such as The Moscow Times, and an English translation of the tweet has been shared thousands of times.

The journalists were able to confirm that at least one of the images from the tweet is available on Google Maps, and it actually shows an active Russian military facility. There are also other examples where you can see other bases in the country.
However, the company says that this is not new information.
Google spokeswoman Genevieve Park said: “We have not made any changes to our satellite imagery in Russia. Although the images circulating are probably legal, they were available on Google Maps long before the war in Ukraine."

Google often blurs potentially important areas on its maps, including military installations. For example, Google Maps pixelates images of French Air Force Air Base 705. However, there are many other military sites that are available for public viewing: Google Maps allows you to see the same detailed satellite imagery of the American Nellis Air Force Base and even the famous Area 51.
It is also worth noting that the military of major countries have access to satellite imagery, which is not subject to any modification by Google.
Google has taken some action against Russia after the country invaded Ukraine. The company suspended advertising sales in the country, closed access to Google Pay for some Russian users in accordance with sanctions, and banned Russian state media accounts from advertising on their YouTube channels. The Russian government has threatened to fine the company for having videos on YouTube containing "disinformation" about its intrusion.
