The base MetroCard fare will remain at $2,75, but the MTA will eliminate its purchase bonus, which adds additional value to these cards for riders who put at least $5,50 on their cards. The monthly MetroCard price will increase from $121 to $127, and the weekly MetroCard will increase from $32 to $33.
The tariff increase will come into effect on April 21. Changes are taking place against the backdrop of the city transport administration (MTA) efforts to provide reliable passenger services, as well as to cope with the financial crisis, as by 2022, the agency will face a potential budget deficit of $ 1 billion. The next increase in the cost of travel on public transport is expected in 2021 year.
MTA acting chairman Fernando Ferrer said that the department’s financial problems are “the most serious problems [MTA] has faced in recent decades,” and added that the increase in fare should prevent potentially disruptive reductions in services, and promised to work on reducing transport city expenses.
Under the plan, the maximum increase in the cost of weekly and monthly passes on the Long Island Rail Road would be 3,85% - $15 for monthly passes and $5,75 for weekly passes. Passengers who already pay $460 or more for their monthly pass will not see the cost increase.
The fare increase in 2019 is part of the 10-year plan, which will increase every two years. It is expected that from this increase, the MTA will additionally receive $ 336 million per year.
