The cost of gasoline in the United States can grow to $ 4 per gallon

Gas prices in the United States are becoming a real headache for motorists, especially in the west of the country.

A survey conducted at more than 5000 gas stations, conducted by AAA, shows that the average price per gallon of gasoline in the US is currently 2,75 dollars, which is 11% more than last month. At the same time in six western states, the average price of a gallon of gasoline already exceeds the 3 dollar: in California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Alaska and Hawaii, writes CNN.

The cost of gasoline at 4 dollars is an average in several counties of California. Prices in many other counties are within a few cents of this mark, including in San Francisco, where the average price is $ 3,98. The average cost of gasoline in California has increased by 20 cents per gallon, or 5%, to 3,83 dollars in the last week alone.

The Midwest also suffered from fuel price hikes. Chicago's average gasoline price jumped 46 cents per gallon, or 16%, to $ 3,27 last month.

According to Tom Klozy, head of the energy analysis department at the Oil Price Information Service, unscheduled maintenance of refineries in several places causes a sudden and uneven rise in prices throughout the country. Western states are especially vulnerable to supply disruptions because they have less processing capacity than other places in the United States.

“The western half of the country has not added refining capacity this century. Supplies were hampered by a group of difficulties, but not disasters, especially in the West of the country,” Kloza explained.

Klose said that gasoline at 4 dollars per gallon may appear at many gas stations in California and possibly in some other western states in the coming weeks. But most of the country expects some reduction in gasoline prices in the near future, when refineries on the Gulf Coast will resume their work after scheduled maintenance in the coming weeks.

Crude oil prices have also played a role in the steady rise in gasoline prices.

The cost of crude oil in the United States since December 24 2018 increased by 51%. US sanctions against Iran and Venezuela and the fighting in Libya, combined with a reduction in oil production by OPEC countries, led to an increase in oil prices.

“Almost every day since Christmas, gas and oil prices have gone up,” Kloza said.
