The United States resumed the work of the diplomatic mission in Lviv: by the end of May they promise to return the embassy to Kyiv

The United States officially resumed diplomatic activity in Ukraine on May 2, more than two months after it first shifted operations to Poland due to Russia's invasion of the country. At the same time, the US Charge d'Affaires in Ukraine said that the embassy could return to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv by the end of May, reports Forbes.

American diplomats returned to the western Ukrainian city of Lvov on May 2. They held a press conference in the city with Christina Quinn, U.S. Chargé d'Affaires ai in Ukraine and the highest-ranking U.S. diplomat in the country.

The US Embassy in Ukraine hopes to return to its original home in Kyiv by the end of the month if it is safe to do so, Queen said at a press briefing.

“The message to Russia is: you have failed. Ukraine is still standing, the government is still functioning, and we are returning first to Lviv and then to Kyiv to help the government,” Queen said on May 2.

The US first closed its embassy in Kyiv on February 14, moving operations to Lvov, and then redeployed all Ukrainian embassy personnel to Poland on February 21.

On April 25, the State Department said it would resume diplomatic activity in Ukraine and signaled that it plans to eventually reopen its embassy in Kyiv. A number of U.S. officials have met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv over the past week, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California).
