US ceased to provide financial assistance to East Jerusalem hospitals

The United States has announced that it will stop providing financial assistance to East Jerusalem hospitals. It was assumed that these hospitals would receive more than 20 million US dollars in accordance with the foreign aid budget approved by the US Congress, but the Trump administration decided to completely cancel funding.

On Friday, September 7, State Department spokeswoman Alessia Dinkel reported this, stressing that 25 million dollars previously allocated to help hospitals will be directed to other priority needs, writes Newsru.co.il.

The Trump administration has been discussing for several weeks the possibility of ending funding for hospitals in East Jerusalem, since some of these medical facilities are supported by influential Christian organizations in the United States.

On Thursday, 6 September, President Donald Trump announced that his administration was freezing financial aid to the Palestinians so that, by acting on them in this way, to persuade them to return to negotiations with Israel under the leadership of the United States.

“I told them: We don’t pay you until we make a deal,” the US president said.

According to the World Health Organization, a network of six hospitals in East Jerusalem provides medical services to Palestinians who are unable to seek help from similar facilities in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Dave Harden, a former US official who headed the Agency for International Development's (USAID) work in the West Bank and Gaza Strip during the Obama administration, said funding cuts could cause the "collapse" of Augusta Victoria Hospital and St John's Eye Hospital.
