The United States warned of the risk of Russian use of nuclear weapons against neighbors

The commander of the American forces on the European continent (EUCOM) and the commander-in-chief of the combined forces of NATO in Europe, General Curtis Scaparrotti, told the US House of Representatives Committee on the Armed Forces about this, wrote RBC.

The Pentagon believes that Russia can use nuclear weapons in limited military conflicts for “quick victories over weaker neighbors” before US troops can intervene.

“Escalation to domination is how they look at it.” And if you look at the modernization of their weapon systems today, I think you will notice how they can be used precisely for these purposes with a certain escalation. I believe that they are really being developed for this, ”the general noted.

According to Scaparrotti, Russia has 2 thousands of weapons systems of non-strategic nuclear weapons that “support Moscow’s erroneous conviction that the limited use of nuclear weapons by the first, possibly low-powered weapons, will give Russia a power advantage in crises and at lower levels of conflict.”

His position was also supported by Acting Assistant Head of the United States Department of Defense for International Security, Catherine Wilbarger. According to her, the modernization of the armed forces of Russia and China "in combination with the problems caused by time and distance we are facing," allow Moscow and Beijing to "use what is commonly called the fait accompli scenario."

If it is used anyway, the United States will have to participate in the escalation of the conflict, “which is an extremely problematic development in the confrontation with the nuclear powers,” Wilbarger emphasized.

Earlier, Russia's ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, stressed that Moscow would not use nuclear weapons to prevent regional conflicts. Russia uses it only if there are threats to the existence of the country.

“Our military doctrine clearly states when and under what circumstances we can use nuclear weapons - if an attack is made against Russia,” he explained.

According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the increased risk of Moscow using nuclear weapons is tied to US actions. According to the diplomat, this is about the onset of a new era, when Washington "set a course for scrapping the entire arms control system" and creates low-yield nuclear munitions. This, he said, will lower the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons.
