The United States can deploy fifth-generation fighters in Europe
The United States intends to increase the size of its air force in Europe as a step to show strength, US Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James said on Monday. At the same time, she called Russia “the biggest threat,” reports The Wall Street Journal.
As the newspaper notes, the United States earlier intensified air patrols over the Baltic Sea and deployed B-2 and B-52 bombers in the UK.
“The plan at this stage is to increase numbers or increase rotation,” Deborah Lee James said.
According to her, the United States is also considering the possibility of deploying fifth-generation F-22 Raptor fighters in Europe.
The head of the Air Force intends to visit NATO allies in Europe for consultations, the article says.
The New York Times reported 13 June with reference to US officials that the Pentagon is exploring the possibility of locating in countries Eastern European heavy weapons as supposed response to “possible Russian aggression” in the region.
In early June, US media reported that the US administration was considering the possibility of deploying land-based missiles in Europe in response to alleged violations of the Treaty on Medium and Short-Range Missiles (INF).
