Among the Russian diplomats expelled from the United States were spies who, in the opinion of American law enforcement officers, followed Russian defectors and their families, writes CNN.
In at least one case, a suspected Russian spy was deceived by a man who was under the protection of the CIA program and received new identity cards to defend himself from the prosecution. This episode and other intelligence data raise concerns that the Russians were preparing to attack Russian émigrés in the United States, whom the Kremlin considers traitors or enemies.
The CIA, the White House and the Russian embassy declined comment.
Recall, relations between the United States and Russia have worsened after the former GRU officer Yuri Skripal and his daughter Julia. British and American authorities accuse Russia of using a nerve agent.
In connection with this event, the United States expelled 60 Russian diplomats from the country.
Democrats in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Senate prepared a report that said that more than two dozen critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin had been suspiciously killed during his term of office.
