The condition of roads in the USA has deteriorated by 25% over 10 years: states with the most dangerous and safe highways

According to a new study on the state of federal roads, in the period from 2008 to 2017, the share of roads in the United States that are in poor condition increased by 25%.

A study by AutoInsurance.org showed that about 10% of all US highways and 8% of American bridges are in a deplorable state (estimated, first of all, road surface roughness). 31% of the roads were found acceptable for use, the condition 59% was called good, writes The Hill.

The increase in the percentage of bad roads comes despite a recent increase in industry funding, from $39,1 million in 2015 to $45 million in 2018.

In urban areas, there were twice as many rough roads than the national average, while in rural areas, only 6% was in poor condition.

The study also showed that, despite the increase in the number of bad highways, the overall percentage of roads in good condition increased by 7% over the same period.

The study states that funding does not have to be related to the final road conditions, given that some areas with worse roads received more funds for this reason, whereas areas with better roads required less funds.

“Funding discrepancies are likely related to road quality, meaning states that need more repairs may receive more funding,” the study said.

The study also showed that the percentage of bridges in poor condition fell from 12,1% in 2008 to 8,9% in 2017.

The data was released as congressional Democrats and President Trump negotiate a $2 trillion infrastructure funding package. Infrastructure, a major theme of Trump's presidential campaign, has long been seen as a possible area of ​​cooperation with Democrats.
