Sikh police officers in New York will be able to wear turbans

New rules have been introduced in New York: Sikh police can now wear traditional turbans instead of police hats, as their religion requires, writes Air force.
Representatives of the New York Police Department clarified that “uniform turbans” must be dark blue, and in addition, they must have the symbols of the police department (NYPD).
Also, according to the new rules, religious police officers are now allowed to wear a half-inch beard (around 13 mm).
Until now, Sikh police officers wore turbans under their caps (the religion requires men to wear turbans), and police officers were not allowed to grow beards, regardless of religious affiliation.
NYPD Chief James O'Neill said the new rules are aimed at getting more members of the Sikh religious community interested in joining what he called "the best police department in the country."
The Sikh Association of United States officers thanked James O'Neal, stating that the entire Sikh community is proud of this event.
According to religious regulations, Sikh men must wear turbans, they are also forbidden to shave a beard.
In May, a Sikh soldier, who was forced to shave off his hair and beard when he joined the US Army, won the right to wear a black or protective turban coat and grow a beard again.
