“Tina Turner, the “Queen of Rock and Roll,” died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her passing, the world has lost a musical legend and role model,” her spokesperson said in a statement.

In recent years, the singer has had very poor health: in 2016 she was diagnosed with bowel cancer, and in 2017 she had a kidney transplant.

Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, and grew up in Nutbush, Tennessee, where she remembers picking cotton with her family as a child. She sang in the tiny town's church choir and as a teenager sang in her future husband Ike's band in St. Louis. He turned down her request to perform with the band until he saw her grab a microphone during a Kings of Rhythm performance and sing B.B. King's "You Know I Love You".

“My relationship with Ike was doomed the day he realized I would be his livelihood,” Turner wrote in her 2018 biography, “My Love Story.” “He needed to control me, economically and psychologically, so that I could never leave him.”

They debuted as Ike and Tina Turner with the single A Fool in Love in July 1960. The song reached the top 30 in the US. But it was their live performances that made a sensation. They toured with the Ike and Tina Turner Revue on the Chitlin' Circuit, including to mixed audiences, such was their commercial power. In 1964, they signed with Warner Bros Loma Records, which released their first album, Live! The Ike & Tina Turner Show.

In the second half of the 1960s, the duo worked with many of the most important figures in rock music. Phil Spector produced River Deep's 1966 single, Mountain High, and they sang with the Rolling Stones in the UK and later in the US. And stars such as David Bowie, Sly Stone, Cher, Elvis Presley and Elton John came to their Las Vegas residence.

They were chart toppers and Grammy winners in the 1970s, but that streak came to an end when Turner left Ike in 1976. He constantly showed aggression, used violence and cheated on the singer. One day she simply ran away from him with only a few cents in her pocket.

As a result of the divorce, which ended in 1978, Turner received only two cars and the rights to her stage name.
