The family of a schoolboy from New York sued $ 60 million for terrible burns in a chemistry class

A grand jury of New York City awarded 60 millions of dollars in compensation to a former high school student who suffered serious burns during a chemical experiment in a school lesson in 2014.

The compensation was the culmination of a multi-year legal process that the family of Alonzo Janes, a former high-school student of Beacon High School in New York, went through, writes CNN.

According to his lawyer, Janes is still being treated for his injuries: damaged tissue requires constant replacement.

“He never went a day without pain,” said attorney Ben Rubinowitz. “These are more than just scars on his face.”

The lawsuit accused the New York Department of Education and the Board of Education that teachers were not warned about the dangers of an experiment known as a rainbow demonstration.

The experiment was intended to demonstrate the colors of the flame produced by burning various metals or salts. The lawsuit states that when Janes tried to do it in a chemistry class in the 10 class, an explosion and fire occurred.

A few months after the incident, the Chemical Safety Committee of the American Chemical Society issued a warning to schools, recommending that they no longer conduct such experiments.

“We regret that the Department of Education and the teacher did not admit that they were negligent,” Rubinowitz said. “The bottom line is that the teacher was in complete control of the experiment and was responsible for the safety of all the children in that class.”

As a result of the explosion, Janes suffered serious burns and injuries to his upper body, which required numerous operations, as a result of which he was disfigured and received scars for life, according to the suit.

According to Rubinowitz, the jury awarded about 29 million dollars for the pain and suffering of a young man, including his surgery, and 29 million dollars for rehabilitation in the future.

“The rainbow display is no longer used in school,” said Nick Paolucci, director of communications and spokesman for the New York City Department of Law.

The department is also considering its "legal options to reduce the award to an amount that is consistent with decisions upheld by courts in similar cases," Paolucci said.

In March 2014 of the year, three months after the explosion, the Chemical Safety Committee released a statement referring to a video warning of the dangers of the experiment.

“When a rainbow demonstration is conducted in an open booth using a flammable solvent, it is a high-risk operation,” committee chairman Robert Hill Jr. said at the time.

According to the lawyer, the compensation will help Yanes to continue the treatment and, possibly, pay for plastic surgery. But this does not help to correct the past.

“Needless to say, the injuries suffered by Alonzo were horrific. They changed his life and, unfortunately, led to deformity,” the human rights activist added.
