Families of illegals separated from children sued the United States and demanded $ 3 million each

Six undocumented immigrant families separated at the Mexico-U.S. border last year have filed independent lawsuits totaling $18 million — $3 million per family. The lawsuits are directed against the Trump administration.

Victims claim that they need money to pay for the advice and medical care needed to heal from the effects of the “torture” that they said they suffered, writes Washington Times.

The lawsuits are the latest effort by immigrant rights groups to punish the administration for separating thousands of children as part of the Justice Department's zero-tolerance policy against people crossing the border illegally.

According to the affected families and their lawyers, the policy is aimed at causing “emotional stress” to parents and children in the hope that an attempt to enter the United States will be as painful and inconvenient as possible, therefore fewer people will try to implement it.

“It succeeded with devastating consequences,” said Mark Fleming, deputy director of litigation at the National Immigration Justice Center.

Under its zero-tolerance policy, the Justice Department began prosecuting most illegal immigrants for illegal entry as a misdemeanor, or for re-entry as a felony.

The administration stated that the goal was to create certain consequences for families that violated the law but were, as a rule, exempted from liability in accordance with the previous rules.
