Russian national weightlifting team may be removed from the Olympics
On Wednesday, it was decided to take away two quotas from Russia for participation in weightlifting competitions: the men's team lost one place and the women's team lost one.
In addition, a similar punishment befell teams of Kazakhstan, Moldova, Azerbaijan and North Korea. By one Olympic quota, Belarus, Romania and Uzbekistan lost, but the last two have already lost one quota.
In a statement, the federation said that in the run-up to the Olympics in Brazil, there would be a provision that would allow the national federations to be excluded from participation in the Games for up to a year in the event of repeated violations.
This will happen if three or more repeat trials of athletes from the 2012 and 2008 Olympics of the year test positive for doping. The provision enters into force immediately.
“Thus, the countries that may be temporarily suspended are Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus,” the federation said in a statement.
By a separate point, the authors of the statement express disappointment in connection with the appointment of the president of the Russian Weightlifting Federation Sergey Syrtsov to the head of the anti-doping committee of the European Weightlifting Federation.
“Given the current circumstances, the IWF Executive Board strongly recommends that Mr. Syrtsov and the European Federation reconsider the appointment to this specific position,” the IWF statement said.
Still like told ForumDailyIt is not completely clear whether members of the Russian national athletics team will be able to take part in the 2016 Olympics of the year. Following the IOC summit, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) was recommended to consider the applications of athletes from Russia on an individual basis.
