Russian-speaking doctor from New York saved the life of a passenger during a flight to Israel

When a medical emergency arose during a flight to Israel, “America's Sexiest Doctor“saved the life of a passenger who was flying to Israel as part of the Birthright Israel program - an educational project that is a ten-day tour to Israel for people with Jewish roots aged 18 to 26 years.

Doctor Michael Varshavsky29, a year-old physician from New York, better known as "Doctor Mike", who was recognized by People magazine "America's Sexiest Doctor", was on board the Delta flight from New York to Tel Aviv when the incident occurred.

26-year-old Matt Farako from Atlanta, Georgia, fell into anaphylactic shock two hours after takeoff.

“I was on a plane, I didn't actually eat anything, but I noticed that my arms were swollen. I told the flight attendant that I wasn't feeling well. The crew on the plane asked if there was a doctor on board, and Dr. Mike responded,” Faraco said.

“I felt my throat starting to swell. I don't have allergies, but there was no EpiPen on the plane. Dr. Mike was able to use what was on board to help me and he stayed with me and monitored my vitals for the rest of the flight. All I can say is gratitude. He really saved me,” Faraco added.

After landing, the victim was hospitalized, and after he was better, he met with his rescuer.

“Although there was no EpiPen on board the plane, fortunately the Delta team had an advanced life support kit that included epinephrine. We had to troubleshoot, adjust the dosage, and decide how to administer the medication. We were able to insert it into the leg muscle - of course it hurts, but then it was the best option. Otherwise, we would have to open his airways with an incision,” the doctor said.

“Thankfully the medicine worked and his airway opened up. We had to monitor his heart and breathing and now it's great to see him healthy again,” he added.

In Tel Aviv, the doctor was sent in cooperation with the non-profit organization America's Voices in Israel, which sends well-known figures to the Holy Land with a mission to promote better understanding between Israel and the United States.

Dr. Mike, who emigrated with his family from Saransk, Russia, to Brooklyn, New York, at the age of 6, completed a residency in family medicine in the 2017 year. After immigration, at first they rented a very small apartment, where it was difficult for the whole family to fit.

Mikhail's father in Russia was a doctor and after moving to the USA he again went to relearn a doctor. Therefore, my mother worked at several jobs to support her family.

After school, Mikhail applied to 7 medical colleges and managed to get into one of them.

“I realized that success can be achieved if you manage to get yourself out of the comfort zone. It is also important not to be afraid of mistakes, everyone admits them. If you are calm about mistakes, then you will be able to take it easy and accept success, ”says Mikhail.
