The best city for retirement in the US is in Florida: what is attractive about it

According to US News and World Report for 2021-2022, Sarasota, Florida topped the list of the best places to retire in the US. Edition Travel and Leisure told why this is the best city for pensioners.

Florida cities ranked eight out of the top 10 in the latest annual poll, which evaluates 150 cities ranked by criteria. These include healthcare, housing affordability, air quality, crime rates, taxes, and overall attractiveness.

Sarasota's beaches, parks, cultural attractions, restaurants, and shopping make it a popular vacation destination as well as an ideal city for retirees. Favorite activities here are golf, boating, fishing and water sports. Beaches such as Lido Key and Siesta Key, a warm swimming Gulf of Mexico, fresh seafood and waterfront restaurants draw travelers to the area.

Cultural and entertainment opportunities abound too. There is the Sarasota Opera House, the Players Center for the Performing Arts, ballet, the Sarasota Museum of Art and the Ringling with its charming circus museum, as well as Ca'd'Zan, which was once the luxurious home of the Ringlings and is now open for tours. The stunning Marie Selby Botanical Garden offers both self-guided and organized tours.

Florida has no state income tax, which appeals not only to retirees but to permanent residents of all ages. Due to the area's popularity, housing prices are higher than in many other Florida cities. But home buyers have a lot of options. With 59 residents as of the 902 Census, Sarasota's population has increased by 2020 percent since 15,38, and neighborhoods have expanded and revitalized with apartments and new homes.

Several highly rated hospitals are located in Sarasota, and the Florida Department of Health maintains a facility in Sarasota for those in need of care but without insurance.

Of course, many people fly here during the winter season to enjoy the warm weather. They fill shops, restaurants and attractions. However, Sarasota's winter bustle (with concerts and endless al fresco dining) more than makes up for the extra crowds.

Summers are quieter, warmer and wetter, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius) in August, the hottest and rainiest month.

For those hoping to spend their retirement years in a warm, sunny city with plenty to do, Sarasota is worth considering — especially retirees who want to pack their golf clubs and leave their snow shovels behind.
