Saakashvili asked for political asylum in Ukraine
The former governor of the Odessa region and the former president of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili, filed an application for political asylum in Ukraine.
Prior to that, he was deprived of Ukrainian citizenship while he was abroad, but he broke through the cordon with a crowd of supporters, reports TASS.
“Saakashvili asks to give him the status of a citizen who needs additional protection. Political asylum is the common name for this status, ”said the lawyer, politician Markian Galabala.
According to him, the application was sent to the Office of the State Migration Service of Ukraine on September 11. No response has yet been received to the petition, although, according to the law, the applicant must receive a response within 24 hours after the petition is submitted.
After Saakashvili’s illegal crossing of Ukraine’s border, Georgia demanded his extradition, since a criminal case was opened against him in that country.
Justice Minister of Ukraine Pavel Petrenko said that the decision on the extradition of Saakashvili has not yet been made.
The Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko explained that the agency is engaged in pre-extradition testing.
“After the illegal return of Saakashvili to Ukraine, we set about conducting this check,” he said.
According to the Prosecutor General, it is necessary to check whether “he is really accused in Georgia of especially grave crimes, which are in the Ukrainian code, and whether there are circumstances that prevent his extradition.” He clarified that such a test will take several weeks.
Recall, in July 2017, President of Ukraine Peter Poroshenko Saakashvili deprived of Ukrainian citizenship.
In response, the former head of the Odessa region stated that he would challenge this decision in court, as well as that "will not stop the fight for Ukraine."
Despite being deprived of his citizenship, Saakashvili arrived in Poland with a Ukrainian passport and announced his intention to cross the border of Ukraine on September 10.
Polish border guards allowed Saakashvili to enter Ukraine, but Saakashvili’s bus was stuck in the “neutral zone”: the Ukrainian side closed the border, and border guards said that “according to information of the operational duty officer of the SSU in Lviv region, the Shegini crossing was mined.
Thereafter Saakashvili supporters broke into Ukraine by storm.
