Fish with human teeth: an unusual catch in North Carolina

A fish with human teeth was caught in North Carolina. Capekod crucian carp, aka a shepherd dog, aka a convict fish, aka a fish with a sheep's head, fell for the bait of an inveterate local fisherman Nathan Martin. Writes about it with the BBC.

Nathan Martin said that he had long wanted to catch a toothy fish, but did not expect that there would be so many teeth in its mouth.

“It was great fishing. And I’m looking forward to eating my delicious catch,” he commented.

A fish with human teeth is not a mutant or a victim of bad ecology. Officially called Cape Cod crucian carp, it lives in North American waters from Cape Cod and Massachusetts to Florida and from the Gulf of Mexico to Brazil.

Usually these fish live near stone piles, piers, mangroves, stones, piers and can grow up to 91 cm in length and weigh up to 9,6 kg.

Adult fish have clearly defined incisors at the front of the jaw. The molars grow in three rows on the upper jaw and two rows on the lower jaw. In the back of the jaw, the crucian carp has powerful and heavy grinders, which are especially important for crushing the shells of prey.

Like humans, the teeth of this fish are necessary for grinding food, which consists of small vertebrates, invertebrates and plants.
