Russia resumes flights with Turkey and the United States: when and for how much it will be possible to fly

From June 22, Russia will resume flights with Turkey, and from June 28 - with the United States and a number of other countries. The publication told in more detail with the BBC.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova spoke about the work of the Russian inspection team in Turkey. A delegation of representatives of Rospotrebnadzor, Federal Tourism Agency and the Ministry of Health was in Antalya. Specialists examined laboratories that conduct tests for coronavirus, ambulance services and plan to meet with the Turkish Ministry of Health.

“In Turkey, the mask regime is observed, control is organized. Masks and sanitizers are available in public places and on transport. Thermal imaging control has been organized at the airport, four- and five-star hotels. Ambulances are also on duty 24 hours a day. Isolation zones have been organized both at the airport and in hotels,” Golikova said.

From June 28, Russia resumes flights with the United States, as well as with Belgium, Bulgaria, Jordan, Ireland, Italy, Cyprus, North Macedonia.

Flights to these countries will not be fully operational as before. In the US, planes will fly on the Moscow-Washington and Moscow-New York routes with a limited number of flights. Ticket prices start at $ 600. A flight to Turkey will cost from $ 260.

Also, the Russian Federation will increase the number of flights to Austria, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Greece, as well as to Qatar, Finland, Croatia and Switzerland.

Closure of flights with Turkey

On April 15, Russia closed flights to Turkey, which shocked everyone in the tourism industry. Türkiye is considered one of the most popular countries among Russian tourists. Many tour operators and travel agencies relied on it in 2021 - and transferred canceled tours from other destinations to Turkey.

The closure of flights to Turkey in April looked suspicious and was viewed by many as political. It was announced after a visit to Istanbul by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky amid the aggravation of the situation on the border of Russia and Ukraine.

Russia, on the other hand, explained the closure with a surge in COVID-19 cases. However, the situation with the spread of coronavirus in Turkey in April really escalated sharply.

In 2015, Russia already closed air traffic with Turkey after a Russian Su-24 bomber was shot down over the country. Travel agents, fearing that negotiations between the two countries could last for months, tried to find out at least some information.

Since April, they have been sounding the alarm non-stop and asking for certainty regarding the Turkish direction. The Association of Tour Operators of Russia complained to Tatyana Golikova that Russia does not open flights with countries that are ready to accept Russian travelers. As a result, travel agencies owe travelers tens of billions of rubles for unused trips - approximately the level of spring 2020.

And although only 3% of tourists agreed to transfer their vacation from Turkey to Russian resorts, the Black Sea coast is still a full house. Videos from crowded beaches in Sochi went viral on social media.

The governor of the Krasnodar Territory admitted that there has never been such a load of resorts in the region. By mid-June, tourists had booked 90% of hotels in the resorts of the Kuban until September.

How air traffic with Turkey was limited

Currently there are four flights a week on the Moscow-Istanbul route. Russia introduced restrictions on flights with Turkey from April 15 - the operational headquarters referred to the difficult epidemiological situation in this country. The decision was extended several times, most recently until June 21 inclusive.

In mid-April, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) estimated the number of tourists who booked tours to Turkey with arrivals from April 15 to May 31 at 533,2 thousand. The total cost of booked tours for this period was more than $ 420 million. From June 1 to June 30, tours more than 338 thousand people bought to Turkey.

In June, ATOR asked Golikova to resume flights to countries popular with tourists.

Against the background of the closure of flights with many countries in Russia, the load on the southern resorts has increased. The head of the Federal Tourism Agency, Zarina Doguzova, said in mid-June that the Russian Black Sea coast was "loaded to the maximum, in places overloaded" with tourists.

Forbes stated that this is fraught with the further spread of COVID-19 within the country. Therefore, it will be safer to open communication with Turkey, where indicators have already stabilized.
