Russian politician was detained at the US-Mexico border: before that, he sharply criticized the war in Ukraine

A Russian politician who publicly opposed Russia's invasion of Ukraine was detained at the US-Mexico border. The edition told in more detail Newsweek.

Viktor Kamenshchikov was a member of the Communist Party, a member of the Vladivostok Duma (parliament) in the administrative center of Primorsky Krai in the Russian Far East.

Kamenshchikov was detained at the US-Mexico border, although "it is not yet known for what, presumably for illegal border crossing."

The report does not indicate where exactly he was detained.

RIA reported that Kamenshchikov had not appeared at Duma meetings since late February, when he publicly opposed the invasion of Ukraine, known in Russia as a "special operation."

A source in the State Duma told the newspaper that "we have no information about where he is now."

On February 27, Kamenshchikov, 31, filed for resignation from the communists after his party recognized the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics.

He said that he "does not agree with the position of the party leadership in its support for military operations in Ukraine and the use of Russian troops on the territory of a neighboring state."

“I am fundamentally against war,” Kamenshchikov said then.

The day after the start of the invasion, February 24, a deputy of the Vladivostok Duma wrote a post in Facebook, where he severely criticized the beginning of the war.

“I think this is obscurantism. “No to war” is everywhere. But weren’t you howling about Crimea? Weren't you the one who shouted: “Defend the Russians”? The war did not start on February 24.02th. And not in February 2014. And not even in August 2008. It began when the idea formed in your sick heads that Russians are better than others,” he wrote. - Well, now rake. No, not from NATO. And from the brothers. Have you reached Kyiv? We met you with flowers??? No. You are fascist aggressors. And every Ukrainian will fight for his country. Despite the language, views and status. Fight until the occupier is completely defeated. And your worthless army will flee in fear, as it should on foreign soil. After all, when the younger brother gets arrogant, the older one can attack??? So Ukraine is the eldest!”

In a March 5 interview, Kamenshchikov said that politicians, including those from his party, tricked MPs into voting for a military invasion.

He said that Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov and leader of the ultra-nationalist Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDDR) Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who died on April 6 after a reportedly long illness, had advance knowledge of Russian President Vladimir Putin's military plans.

Russians who oppose the war in Ukraine face arrest and imprisonment. In April, the Russian parliament passed a law that would allow citizens who spread so-called fake information about the military to face up to 15 years in prison.

However, Kamenshchikov said in a March interview, "most Russians don't understand that by staying silent they are adding to their own long-term losses."

According to him, any unwillingness of people to express disagreement with the war "means that they are for it", and that they and Russia will have to pay "5, 10, 20 years for all the horror that is happening today."

Anatoly Dolgachev, first secretary of the Primorsky regional branch of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, said that the party had asked Kamenshchikov to step down as a deputy. However, he is still listed as an "active member" of the legislature.

Dolgachev said that for a communist “the last thing is to flee to the United States, whose imperialist policies the party opposes.”
