Russian snipers killed an American who was standing in line for bread in Chernihiv
A US citizen was killed in the Ukrainian city of Chernihiv. His sister said that his brother was killed while he was standing in line for bread with other civilians. Writes about it New York Post.
James Whitney Hill, 67, was identified by his sister Cheryl Hill Gordon on Facebook.
“Yesterday my brother Jimmy Hill was killed in Chernihiv,” Cheryl Gordon wrote. “He was standing in line for bread with several people when they were shot by Russian snipers. His body was found in the street by the local police."
Earlier, the US embassy in Kyiv said the Russian military shot dead 10 Americans in the attack, which Russia denies.
In a brief telephone interview, Gordon said that another of her brothers had been notified of Hill's murder by the State Department.
Hill has lived in Ukraine for the last 25 years and worked as a teacher.
According to Gordon, he began a romantic relationship with a former student, Irina, who is in her 40s and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about eight years ago.
On the subject: Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the US Congress and compared the bombing of Ukraine with Pearl Harbor and the September 11 attacks
The couple ended up in Chernihiv because, “after two years of searching,” Hill found a hospital there with a doctor who “knew a lot more about multiple sclerosis than other doctors in the area,” his sister said.
“He ended up taking her to the hospital in January,” she said. “When the war broke out, he decided to stay.”
Hill “actually tried to get her out of there, but Irina was in a bad state,” the sister explained.
“It would take an ambulance to take her out, but it was impossible to get Irina out,” Gordon said. “The hospital was running out of food, so he went to eat and they killed him there.”
According to Gordon, Hill had to periodically return to the United States to meet the requirements for obtaining a Ukrainian visa. He was the day Olya owned real estate in Idaho near Yellowstone National Park, which he rented out on Airbnb.
A friend of the deceased, Karin Moseley, said that Hill was "literally thrown into the middle of hell" after a trip to Ukraine in December.
Gordon has been unable to speak to Hill lately because he has been having trouble charging his phone and getting services since the intrusion, but has been able to communicate with him via Facebook.
In a series of heartbreaking posts this week, Hill, who is survived by his son Kai Troe Hill, described the worsening situation.

“We are stuck in Chernigov. They bomb here every night. People are discouraged. Lack of food, gas, water, electricity... there is a siege here,” he wrote. “We're trying to come up with a plan.” We need to get out. We would like to take our family with children. It's not safe here. And getting out too.”
The next day he wrote: “We are holding out, very cold, food portions are reduced, bombardments and explosions are heard most of the night, it’s hard to sleep. People get depressed. We could try to run away tomorrow, but Ira's mom doesn't want to. Every day people die trying to escape. And at night bombs fall here. Risk anyway. I only have Wi-Fi for a few hours a day.
