Rockefeller Center will rent luxury apartments through Airbnb

Airbnb guests will soon be able to book luxurious suites in the heart of the famous New York Rockefeller Center: the company is going to turn the 10 floors into the famous 33-floor Rockefeller Plaza skyscraper into a hotel.

Airbnb plans to refit more than 10 floors of the building at 75 Rockefeller Plaza (a skyscraper on the north side of Rockefeller Center), turning this space into 200 luxury apartments, in collaboration with one of the largest developers of New York RXR Realty LLC, which owns the building, writes Bloomberg. In a joint statement of the companies, it is noted that the deal will create a “new category of urban residence” in New York.

All new apartments will be individually decorated. They offer views of St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Empire State Building, and, in season, the famous Rockefeller Center ice skating rink and Christmas tree. The idea is to bring together “all the comforts of home,” giving guests “an authentic New York City experience and a sense of community familiar to locals,” Airbnb said in a statement.

Airbnb's move towards this deal began as the company grew from a humble startup into a comprehensive travel platform offering flights, accommodations and travel experiences. Earlier this year, Airbnb agreed to buy HotelTonight - its biggest acquisition to date - in a bid to increase hotel listings on the platform.

The partnership with RXR and the acquisition of HotelTonight extend the capabilities of Airbnb, which plans an initial public offering by the end of next year. As 29 learned in April, Marriott International Inc. plans to make a serious competition to Airbnb and for this expands its own home rental business in the United States.

Airbnb and RXR are also studying plans to transfer short-term rental services to other RXR facilities, such as the project at 47 Hall Street, the building opposite the Brooklyn Naval Plant.

The partnership could help Airbnb legitimize its presence in New York, where the company has faced stiff resistance from local officials. The city has some of the strictest rental laws in America: it is illegal to rent out a residential apartment for up to 30 days. This means that approximately 55 Airbnb properties in New York City are theoretically being rented out illegally.

“When we launched Airbnb more than 10 years ago, it was immediately clear how people opening their doors to guests could help them feel like locals,” said Airbnb Chief Executive Officer Brian Chesky.

“Through this new partnership with RXR, we hope to bring that same unique feel to new spaces in downtown Manhattan and beyond so that everyone can enjoy a true New York City living experience,” he added.
