Risk of seizures, coma and death: dangerous nasal sprays are withdrawn from sale in the USA

In the United States, three forms of nasal spray are being withdrawn from the market because they may contain too much artificial hormone used in the treatment of certain diseases and conditions, including diabetes and frequent urination. CBS News.

Ferring Pharmaceuticals is recalling the sprays "due to super-strong specific activity or excessive amounts of desmopressin," according to a report released on Wednesday August 5 by the US FDA.

Risks associated with too much of the commercially produced hormone desmopressin can include abnormally low blood sodium levels, which can lead to seizures, coma, and even death.

The problem was discovered during routine testing, with one case of non-fatal "side effects" reported in the US, the agency said.

Review includes DDAVP Nasal Spray 10 mcg / 0,1 ml, Desmopressin Acetate Nasal Spray 10 mcg / 0,1 ml, and Stimate Nasal Spray 1,5 mg / ml.

DDAVP and Desmopressin Acetate nasal sprays are used as antidiuretic replacement therapy in the treatment of central diabetes insipidus and transient polyuria (excessive urination) and polydipsia (excessive alcohol consumption due to thirst) following a head injury or pituitary surgery, according to the recall notice.

Stimate nasal spray is used to treat some patients with hemophilia A or patients with classic mild to moderate von Willebrand disease, a bleeding disorder.
