Health and Life Risk: FDA Expands List of Dangerous Sanitizers Again

The list of hand sanitizers that consumers categorically should not use has increased again: now it has 135 items, writes Pennlive.

The FDA has been warning consumers since mid-June of hand sanitizers that it says contain either toxic methanol, also known as wood alcohol, or are contaminated with dangerous microbes.

Some companies have recalled their products. The FDA was able to prevent certain products from entering the U.S. market through import warnings.

With the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States, the demand for hand sanitizers has skyrocketed. Health officials advise people to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to avoid the spread of the coronavirus. If soap and water are not available, hand sanitizer is recommended.

As demand for hand sanitizers grew, so did the number of companies making them.

FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hayne said: “Unfortunately, some companies are taking advantage of the increased use of hand sanitizers during the coronavirus pandemic and are putting lives at risk by selling products with hazardous and unacceptable ingredients. Consumers and healthcare professionals should not use hand sanitizers containing methanol. ”

FDA leads list on their website... Each entry includes the name of the manufacturer, distributor, date added to the listing, product, NDC numbers, if available, and status.

Most toxic hand sanitizers are manufactured in Mexico, but not all.
