Republicans prepare immigrants for naturalization for free: how the course works

The Republican National Committee (RNC) has announced the launch of an initiative to help immigrants prepare for the naturalization test. Read more about this publication The Hill.

The program is called the Republican Civic Initiative (RCI). It offers participants a 10-hour course divided into four sessions "to help future voters" pass the civic portion of the test.

The first course began on July 14 in Doral, Florida at the RNC Hispanic Community Center. Additional courses will be held in various states across the country, including Texas, Georgia, Nevada, California and Pennsylvania.

“Our commitment is to empower everyone to make the American Dream a reality,” said RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel. "Unlike Democrats, Republicans do not take minority communities for granted, and we will continue initiatives to earn every vote until November."

Republicans have sought to increase support from minority communities, especially Hispanic voters, for the upcoming elections.

The RNC said that as of January 2021, there were more than 9,2 million legal permanent residents who are eligible to become citizens and vote but have not been naturalized. Nearly 2,5 million of them are from Mexico.

Immigrants attending the course will learn the answers to basic civics questions that will appear on the naturalization test and celebrate the end of the course.

The people conducting the classes will be trained by RNC Strategic Initiatives staff, who are US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) certified instructors. They will receive adapted materials from USCIS.

The RNC said in a statement that the majority of legal permanent residents are in areas where the RNC already has staff and community centers that can help them.

Along with USCIS, RNC plans to work with non-profit organizations such as Civics Fundamentals.

The RNC's initiative to help immigrants pass the naturalization test comes after USCIS announced a new citizenship initiative this week. USCIS will partner with local leaders who share their experiences to encourage immigrants to become naturalized citizens.
