Wall Street Journal reporter arrested in Russia: he is suspected of espionage

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was arrested in Russia on suspicion of espionage. This is the first time an American journalist has been detained on charges of espionage by Moscow since the Cold War. The edition told in more detail CNN.

“The Federal Security Service (FSB) of the Russian Federation stopped the illegal activities of US citizen Evan Gershkovich, born in 1991, a correspondent for the Moscow bureau of the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal,” the FSB said in a statement.

The department said that Gershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains. He, assure the service, "tried to obtain secret information" concerning "the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex."

The Russian agency claims that the reporter, accredited by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), "acted on the instructions of the American side and tried to obtain classified information."

The Wall Street Journal said the publication "strongly denies the FSB allegations and demands the immediate release of our trusted and dedicated reporter Evan Gershkovich."

"We stand in solidarity with Evan and his family," the Wall Street Journal added.

According to his biography on the Wall Street Journal website, Gershkovich deals with Russia, Ukraine, and the former Soviet Union. Previously, he worked for Agence France-Presse, The Moscow Times and New York Times news agencies.
