Rating of fruits and vegetables in their pesticides
Almost 70% of samples from 48 of the studied types of vegetables and fruits are contaminated with pesticide residues, shows one of the last reports Environmental Working Group (EWG), which analyzes the levels of pesticides in fruits and vegetables. Pesticides persisted even after the products were washed, and in some cases, after cleaning the skin from them.
36 thousands of samples have been tested. According to the research results, the “Dirty dozen” of the most contaminated fresh produce was collected, as well as the “Clean fifteen” fruits and vegetables that contain the least amount of pesticides.
“Dirty Dozen”:
- Strawberry;
- spinach;
- nectarines;
- apples;
- peaches;
- celery;
- grapes;
- pears;
- cherry;
- tomatoes;
- Bell pepper;
- potatoes.
“Clean fifteen”:
- sweet corn;
- avocado;
- pineapples;
- cabbage;
- bow;
- peas;
- papaya;
- asparagus;
- mango;
- eggplants;
- melon;
- kiwi;
- cantaloupe;
- cauliflower;
- grapefruit.
Pesticides are widely used in food production to control pests, such as insects, rodents, weeds, bacteria, mold and fungus.
According to the World Health Organization, pesticides can be potentially toxic to humans, have a negative effect on reproductive function, the immune or nervous system, cause cancer and lead to other problems.
