Separated from children, illegal immigrants wrote a letter to the American people
Dozens of desperate parents detained at the US border signed an open letter to the American people, demanding support in their efforts to reunite with their children. The handwritten letter in Spanish is dated 15 in July and signed by 54 by parents from the Center for the Detention of Immigrants at Port Isabel, Los Fresnos, Texas.
“We were not prepared for the nightmare we faced here,” the letter said. “The United States government deceived our children into kidnapping them and did not give us a chance to say goodbye,” quotes USA Today. It also says that parents have been separated from their children for more than a month, and they are not informed about where children are and what happens to them, besides the fact that children live in other families.
Many parents, the author writes, had the opportunity to speak with their children only once: the children did not recognize their voices, felt abandoned and unloved.
“It makes us feel dead while alive. Even with all the trauma, nightmares, anguish and pain that the government imposes on us and our children, we still have to fight for our asylum cases. But the government does not give us the opportunity to fight, and the judges do not give us the opportunity to speak out,” the letter says.
It also says that US authorities reject “almost all” asylum requests. Parents say they are being pressured to sign deportation papers before being allowed to see their children again. Eileen Blessinger, an immigration lawyer in Falls Church, Va., has made multiple trips to Los Fresno to try to help clients. “It’s completely crazy,” she said. “They refuse everyone.”
“We feel that there is no other way out of this nightmare, because the authorities are becoming our judges. Please help us and bring justice to Texas!”
The letter was made public a few days after the Trump administration officially introduced new rules for rejecting asylum applications, which makes it difficult for such applicants to immigrate. Last month, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that victims of domestic violence and group attacks will no longer be eligible for asylum. Last week, the government argued that the Session’s decision was binding and provided ample leeway for immigration officers. In particular, it allows officers to consider the illegal entry of refugees into the United States as an argument against them even in the case of perfectly viable applications.
Supporters of immigrants saw a ray of hope on Monday, when a California judge rejected the complaint of health and social services officials who claimed that an order for accelerated reunification of parents and children leads to risks to the well-being of these children. The judge said that the lawsuit is an attempt by the government to deny blame for the damage caused to children as a result of family separation policies.
