Broken windows and cars: severe hail and tornado hit Texas

A huge hailstorm the size of a baseball and a powerful tornado hit Texas and Oklahoma on April 28. In some areas of these states there were severe thunderstorms, as described in more detail by the publication. CNN.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, there have been 38 reports of severe hail in Texas and Oklahoma, including near San Antonio, Fort Worth and Oklahoma City.

The size of the hail was at least 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter.

“We were in the house with the children at the time. Something incredible was happening outside. Soon there was a loud noise and the house even shook slightly from the large hail,” said Rebecca Gilliam, a resident of Hondo, Texas.

According to experts, even one inch (2,5 cm) thick hail can cause significant damage. And in the suburbs of San Antonio, a hail of 4 inches (10 cm) was reported. He damaged cars and houses.

“The hail was so strong and powerful that it broke through the roof in many places,” Gilliam said.

The National Weather Service office in Austin said it was a heavy hail.

"Yesterday's hail could be another billion-dollar weather disaster for the United States," said CNN senior meteorologist Dave Hennen. “This could be the second billion-dollar disaster in Texas this year, following the extreme cold outbreak in February.”

“Hurricanes have repeatedly impacted predominantly rural areas in this part of the country, but in this case, hail damaged large populated areas like San Antonio, Fort Worth and Oklahoma City, so there was a lot of damage,” Hennen explained.

In northern Fort Worth, three-inch hail (7,6 cm) was reported. He smashed car windows and damaged the roof.

“It was excessively loud. Hail hit the house, hit the windows, and we were just hoping the windows would hold up and not break,” said Haley Brink, a CNN meteorologist. “At one point it was so loud that you couldn’t hear the person standing next to you.”

“Luckily, our cars were in the garage, but there were dents in the metal roof vents,” Brink added.

Others were less fortunate because their cars were left outside during the storm.

Another severe thunderstorm caused severe hail in the Norman, Oklahoma area. It reported a hail the size of a baseball.

In addition to heavy, destructive hail, the storms provoked destructive winds and several tornadoes.

The National Meteorological Service in New Braunfels conducted a survey of tornado damage in the area and confirmed that EF-1, with a maximum wind speed of 110 miles (177 km) per hour, lasted 8 minutes (from 19:33 pm to 19:41 pm. The tornado trail was 1,82 miles (3 km) long and 600 yards (550 m) wide, writes KSAT.

The National Weather Service reports that the tornado was able to "rip off the roof of a barn" and "flip the van." He then crossed Highway 173 and knocked the house off its foundations.
