Passing security control in 5 seconds: American Airlines launches a special application for its customers

American Airlines (AA) customers traveling with TSA PreCheck can now go through airport security without stress. The airline has teamed up with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to test a mobile identity app that replaces the need for physical boarding passes and ID cards. About app

The Airside Digital Identity mobile app is available for iOS and Android devices. There are some limitations in that the program is still in beta testing. In addition to being only offered to AA travelers with a TSA PreCheck membership, the service is only available at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

The airline hopes to provide this service at TSA PreCheck checkpoints at Miami International Airport (MIA), Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA) and other airports by the end of this year.

Before the trip

Passengers who are eligible for the AA program and want to use this service can easily create a Mobile ID. After downloading the Airside Digital Identity app, travelers take a photo of their face, scan their driver's license or passport with the app, and enter their AAdvantage number.

The app will then check the customer information and compare it to each state's Department of Motor Vehicle records, or to the embedded NFC chip in a passport. Once verified, customers can store their personal mobile ID on their mobile device until they travel.

At the airport

Once verified, all eligible customers have to do is read the QR code and consent to the transfer of American Airlines Mobile ID to TSA. The TSA will then instruct customers using the service to look into the camera so that the TSA computer system can match the customer's encrypted image with their American Airlines mobile ID. The airline says the entire process at the airport will take less than five seconds.

Future Initiatives

Mobile ID is an extension of American Airlines' initiatives to improve the customer experience. Julie Rath, Vice President of Customer Experience, Loyalty and Marketing, said: “We are committed to making our customers' journeys easier. By simplifying the identity verification process, we are helping our customers while moving the travel industry further along the path to truly excellent customer service.”

With US Customs and Border Protection's face matching, AA customers can already verify their identity at several international gates. In the future, AA intends to introduce similar technology to baggage counters and internal gates.
