'Unacceptable': 145 business leaders ask Senate to tighten arms control
CEOs of large companies, including Uber, Airbnb, Squarespace, and Yelp, are urging Senate members to pass legislation that can help combat violence in the United States. Writes about this Time.
In a letter sent to members of Congress on 12 of September, 145 business leaders were asked to introduce stricter biographical data verification rules and tighten the extreme risk law (which is also known as the “Red Flag Act”). It allows law enforcement agencies to temporarily take weapons from individuals who exhibit dangerous behavior.
“Doing nothing about America's violence crisis is simply unacceptable, and it is time to take a stand on the issue of safety,” the letter said.
The letter mentioned recent mass shootings in El Paso (Texas) and Dayton (Ohio). Violence in cities such as Chicago (Illinois) and Brooklyn (New York) was also mentioned, and it was noted that this was a “public health crisis requiring urgent action.”

“Gun violence is not inevitable: it is preventable. There are steps Congress can and should take to prevent and reduce violence. We need our legislators to support common sense gun laws that could prevent tragedies like these,” the letter said.
Levi Strauss & Co., Reddit, Postmates, Royal Caribbean and Bloomberg LP were also among the companies that signed the letter. Michael Bloomberg, co-founder of Bloomberg LP, founded Everytown for Gun Safety in 2006, a nonprofit that advocates gun control.
This letter is an example of how a large business offers its support to the arms control movement.
