Professions that could disappear due to COVID-19: an unexpected list

The coronavirus crisis has upended the labor market like no other U.S. recession, wiping out 22,2 million jobs in the early spring when lockdowns were imposed. Edition USA Today told what professions can completely disappear from the labor market.

“COVID-19 will change the way we work and spend money,” says Glassdoor chief economist Andrew Chamberlain.

The number of posts on Glassdoor has dropped significantly in the past month. The number of vacancies for audiologists (they treat hearing disorders) fell by 70% - to 2336 from 7710 in October 2019. The number of vacancies fell by 61% for optometrists, 50% for hairdressers, 41% for groomers, 40% for therapists and 34% for sales managers.

However, while many Americans put off eye exams and cut their own hair for a while, they will almost certainly want these services again when the epidemic loses ground. Likewise, he said, companies are likely to increase their recruitment of salespeople when their revenues return to pre-pandemic levels.

But other positions, such as office and administrative positions, were already in decline due to long-term trends, and the health crisis has accelerated the shift. Others, such as positions in restaurants, have been hit by unprecedented industry damage that could take years to recover.

Here is a list of jobs that Glassdoor believes could decline or disappear within a few years:

Cook

And it's not that Americans are in no hurry to visit restaurants in large numbers. According to the National Restaurant Association, nearly one in six establishments (or nearly 100 in total) closed permanently or permanently during the crisis. It will take years for new restaurants to open, Chamberlain said, and chefs, waiters and bartenders will find their lost jobs again.

Assistant Leader

About 40% of Americans worked from home during the coronavirus outbreak, mostly employees. Many are expected to continue working from home at least a few days a week, even after the crisis is over. This reduces the need for administrators. Chamberlain said that if the company reduced its office space, it would need fewer administrators.

Accounts Payable Specialist

Many employees who pay bills have already been supplanted by automated software that can perform these functions. The pandemic has accelerated the transition, Chamberlain says, as companies continue to cut costs amid declining sales.

According to Chamberlain, the number of specialists who communicate by email with job seekers, schedule interviews and test potential hires have decreased in recent years due to new software, and this trend will intensify.

Product demonstrator

The number of people displaying household cleaning and personal care products or other essentials in shopping malls has decreased as Americans increasingly choose to shop online. During the pandemic, the transition to online trading intensified dramatically, Chamberlain said. Now, instead of in-store demonstration products, many companies post videos on their sites that millions can view.

Brand ambassador

Like product demonstrators, brand ambassadors advertise products and services, but only for a specific brand. According to Chamberlain, the number of such workers is likely to continue the downward trend, as e-commerce replaces retail.

Professor

• Discount: 39%

Chamberlain stressed that the finances of both public and private colleges are undermined by the health crisis, limiting their ability to hire professors. Even after the outbreak subsides, the financial strain is unlikely to ease, he said.

Event coordinators who host meetings, conferences, trade shows and other events have noticed vacancies are disappearing as companies hold online meetings during the crisis. While Chamberlain believes many jobs could return once the pandemic is over, it's unclear how willing companies are to move at least some online meetings over the long term.

Overall, says Glassdoor's chief economist, the stable employment of architects is likely to face a setback, as the trend of work from home forces companies to build and rent less office buildings.
