In Moscow, they announced possible retaliatory measures in connection with the withdrawal by the United States of Russian diplomatic property in this country.

He noted that the Russian side is seeking the speedy return of property, but “for now, out of inertia, the State Department is trying to link a positive solution to the issue with providing the Americans with a plot of land in St. Petersburg for the construction of a new building for their Consulate General.”

“We consider such attacks inappropriate, since in Russia nothing that belonged to them by right of property was taken away from the United States,” the Russian diplomat explained.

He hopes that the parties “will still be able to resolve the situation in a constructive manner.”

“Otherwise, we will be forced to take retaliatory measures against American diplomatic property in our country in accordance with the principle of reciprocity accepted in diplomatic practice. The American side is aware of what such measures might be. But this would not be our choice,” Gonchar emphasized.

Recall that the administration of US President Barack Obama at the end of December 2016 introduced sanctions against 9 of Russian institutions, companies and individuals, including the GRU and the FSB, for “interference with elections” and “pressure on American diplomats” working in Russia.

Also USA closed access to two residential complexes - the so-called suburban "dachas" of the Russian Permanent Representation in New York and the embassies in Washington, which are Russian diplomatic property. In addition, persona non grata are announced 35 Russian diplomats.
