After Biden's victory, immigrants from Mexico go to the US border en masse

The number of immigrants arriving at the US-Mexico border has skyrocketed in just a few months after Joe Biden's victory in the US presidential election. The edition told in more detail New York Post.

Acting head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Mark Morgan said the number of immigrant arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border has reached "record levels" since Biden was elected president.

“We are already seeing the negative impacts of the proposed policy changes,” Morgan said. “Cartels and smugglers are spreading the idea that our borders will be open. And they are right. The 74 immigrants who arrived at the U.S. southern border in December represent crisis-level numbers.”

It is worth noting that Morgan's statement about the crisis at the border due to 74 thousand immigrants in December runs counter to the statistics for 2019. According to the data, 74 thousand immigrants cannot be a record number, since in May 2019 there was recorded a 13-year record detentions of immigrants on the southern border of the United States, and then their number was 144 thousand per month. And in total, in fiscal 2019, the border patrol detained 851 people (an average of 000 illegal immigrants per month) - this is record number of illegal US border crossings for the previous 12 years.

Morgan criticized the incoming administration for its "open borders strategy."

He does not approve of Biden's plan to abandon Donald Trump's tough immigration policy, nevertheless, he expressed the hope that the situation could be improved through dialogue with the incoming team of the leadership of the Border and Customs Service.

“We hope that the dialogue will continue and they will actually listen to the experts who are on the ground. We hope they will listen to the facts and reality. And that they are going to make the necessary adjustments that we need to protect our country,” said the head of the Border and Customs Service.

“What I heard from the CBP staff, the experts who participated in the briefings, was very positive,” he continued. “They said that the questions asked by the new team were good, correct and showed a high level of awareness. The team really listened and heard what was being discussed.”

Morgan emphasized that he was also reassured by Biden's recent decision not to lift current US President Donald Trump's restrictions on granting asylum on the Mexican border.

Biden's initial pledge to reverse his predecessor's immigration policies within the first 100 days will be delayed to prevent "2 million people from ending up at our border."

The new commander-in-chief intends to work with Congress to secure the funding needed to appoint asylum judges to hear pending cases. This process, he warned, could take up to six months.

“That’s another reason why I feel confident,” Morgan explained. — Biden himself said that he is not going to do what he promised on the first day, because he knows that this will cause a crisis. And that was very nice to hear. But there may still be a crisis in the future; the “open borders” strategy needs to be reformed.
