It's time to go home: when Elon Musk's Crew Dragon ship will return to Earth and how to see it
The Crew Dragon will leave the International Space Station (ISS) with two NASA astronauts on board August 1. They should get to Earth on the 2nd. Writes about it "New Time".
The spacecraft is due to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean and NASA has already drawn up a preliminary schedule for the main stages of the return.
Astronauts' farewell ceremony from the ISS will begin August 1 at 06:10 PST (09:10 New York). The spacecraft is scheduled to depart from the ISS on August 1 at 19:34 New York time, while a landing in the Atlantic Ocean is scheduled for August 2 at 14:42 New York time.
NASA promises to broadcast all stages of the return of the astronauts on its website.
The return process will be dramatic. “The Dragon crew will travel at orbital speed, traveling at approximately 17 mph (500 kph). The maximum temperature it will experience upon re-entry is approximately 28 degrees Fahrenheit (163 Celsius),” NASA said in a statement.
SpaceX's rescue vessel will meet with Crew Dragon to retrieve the spacecraft and parachutes from the water. The capsule will be lifted aboard the ship, and Benken and Hurley will be met by the medical team.

"This is SpaceX's final test flight and will provide data on the performance of the Falcon 9 rocket, Crew Dragon spacecraft and ground systems, as well as on-orbit operations, docking and recovery," NASA said in a statement.
If Crew Dragon passes these latest tests, SpaceX will be able to provide regular operational flights to the ISS starting later this year. And it could end NASA's dependence on Russian spacecraft for the first time since the start of the space shuttle era.
While on the ISS, Behnken has already completed two spacewalks to service the station, and now he, along with partner Doug Hurley, will prepare to be sent to Earth.
For his generation of astronauts, launching a spacecraft into the water is a bit of an unknown proposition, Behnken said, so they need to get the job done so NASA teams on Earth can safely locate and remove the capsule from the water.
“Crew Dragon is an automated vehicle with manual backup capability, so we will monitor the ship and if we need to intervene, we will,” Behnken explains.
