Poland expels 45 Russian diplomats: they are suspected of espionage

Polish authorities have compiled a list of 45 Russian diplomats who are suspected of espionage. The Russian ambassador confirmed that they were being expelled from the country, reports with the BBC.

The Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) requests the expulsion of Russians from Polish territory “in connection with Russia’s policy towards the Republic of Poland and its allies, as well as taking into account Russian aggression against Ukraine.”

“The activities of the identified intelligence officers and persons collaborating with them serve the implementation of Russian intelligence projects aimed at the stability of the Republic of Poland and its partners in the international arena, and pose a threat to the interests and security of Poland,” ABW said in a statement.

Among the people named in the statement is a Russian intelligence officer who is associated with a Polish citizen detained on March 17 this year on suspicion of espionage, ABW said.

Russian Ambassador to Warsaw Sergei Andreev was summoned to the Polish Foreign Ministry.

“I confirm that the ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry today. We leave reports from Polish media about the expulsion of diplomats without comment,” Andreev said on March 23, leaving the building of the Polish Foreign Ministry.

According to him, there are “no grounds” for diplomats to suspect espionage activities. Embassy staff were given up to five days to leave.

Poland made the decision to expel Russian diplomats “in coordination with its allies,” said Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Lukasz Jasina.

In social networks, they wrote that on Wednesday night, smoke was coming from the building of the Russian embassy in Warsaw.

According to information on the website of the Russian Embassy in Warsaw, 60 Russian diplomats are currently working in Poland. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Interfax that Moscow would respond appropriately to the expulsion of 45 diplomats from Poland.
