Politicians Around the World Demand Amazon to Raise Salaries and Pay More Taxes

The richest man on the planet Jeff Bezos has attracted the attention of 400 politicians around the world who are demanding that Amazon raise salaries for its employees and fulfill other obligations. Fox Business.

In a letter to Amazon's 56-year-old CEO - the world's richest man with a net worth of $185 billion - the politicians say the world "knows Amazon can afford to pay its workers more, pay its environmental costs and taxes" but that the company “has avoided paying its debts to workers, society and the planet.”

The letter was signed by US congressmen Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib and vice-president of the European Parliament Heidi Hautala, as well as a number of UK parliament members and leaders of Turkey, France and Greece.

They note that Bezos' wealth has skyrocketed during the pandemic as consumers stock up on essentials and turn to online shopping in more quantities than ever before.

They want Amazon to raise salaries for its employees in all warehouses, fulfill its commitment to zero hydrocarbon emissions by 2030 (Amazon's carbon footprint equals those of “more than two-thirds of the world's countries”), and ensure transparency about the privacy and use of its customers' data. ...

The letter says Amazon employees "find themselves in dangerous working conditions, receive little or no pay increases, and face retaliation for trying to protect themselves and organize their colleagues."

Politicians also took notice of Amazon's tax deductions.

“By avoiding taxes around the world, you are harming public health, education, housing, social security and infrastructure,” it said.

Amazon has not yet responded to the publication's request for comment.
